Trinity House Box

19th century
Sold 19 February 2025 · John Howkins Antiques
This “Trinity House Box” found a buyer.

It was listed by John Howkins Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A very rare rosewood Trinity House salt box. The back and sloping front inlaid with 2 sailing ships in various woods including boxwood, walnut, satinwood and stained sycamore. The hinged lid opens to the original paper lined interior and the outback with similar matching paper.

Trinity House boxes were made by lighthouse keepers while serving their time offshore to while away the time. Their nautical romantic theme have always made them very collectable and often sold to owners and Captains of the ships. Regular Trinity House boxes are relatively rare but it would be fair to say that this salt box is a rare find.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Maritime marquetry involves creating pictorial designs using various wood veneers, often depicting ships and nautical scenes, which gained popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries amongst sailors and craftsmen.

These pieces typically utilise a solid wood carcase decorated with contrasting wood veneers such as mahogany, satinwood, and boxwood, assembled using traditional hand-cut dovetails and brass hinges.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut veneers with natural ageing, subtle colour variations in the wood, traditional joinery without modern fasteners, and minor wear consistent with age and handling.

Place the box on a flat surface such as a mantelpiece, side table, or desk to add texture, historical interest, and warmth through natural timber tones.

Keep the item away from direct sunlight and strong temperature fluctuations to prevent veneer lifting or wood splitting, and periodically apply a microcrystalline wax to nourish the surface.
