This nineteenth-century French trinket box is made from heavy clear cut crystal glass in a geometric hobnail diamond pattern. The square casket has a hinged gilt bronze mount around the rim, featuring fancy decoration along the outer edges and a decorative ornate metal clasp on the front. The box measures 10.5 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 7.5 cm deep. Placed on a bedside table in a bedroom, this piece serves as a luxurious container for small personal items such as rings and earrings. The transparent crystal allows the contents to be viewed from the outside, while the gold-coloured metal mounts and clasp provide a contrast against the clear glass. The structured form and detailed hardware bring a French chateau style to the interior space.

French crystal caskets gained prominence in the 19th century as luxury vanity items produced by prestigious glassworks such as Baccarat and Saint-Louis. Designed to hold jewellery or precious keepsakes, these items reflected high craftsmanship and were featured in affluent households across Europe.

These boxes were constructed using high-lead crystal, celebrated for its clarity and heavy weight, cut with diamond or hobnail patterns. The rims and hinges were formed from gilt bronze, brass, or ormolu to provide structural strength and secure closures.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut facet edges with sharp, precise geometry, high refractive clarity, and considerable physical weight. Gilt metal mounts should fit the glass body tightly with hand-chased decorative detailing and authentic age-related patination.

Display the casket on a marble-topped sideboard, dressing table, or bedside console where natural or warm directional light can illuminate the facet cuts. It serves both as a functional container for small items and as a reflective accent piece.

Dust the surface using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to reach recessed cuts. Avoid immersing the box in water or using harsh chemicals on the gilded metal, as moisture can compromise the hinges and oxidise the metal mounts.
