Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th century Georgian side chair originates from the Chippendale period. The giltwood frame displays a gold finish with elaborate acanthus leaf carving, an ornate pierced splat back, and cabriole legs ending in claw and ball feet. Emerald green damask textile upholstery covers the padded seat with a patterned floral motif. Overall dimensions measure 99 cm high, 56 cm wide, 43 cm deep, with a seat height of 51 cm. In a modern interior, this piece serves as a distinctive occasional seat in a reception room or study. The traditional form integrates well into classic design schemes, providing a functional seating option for living spaces.

FAQs

Georgian giltwood furniture, originating in 18th-century Britain, is characterised by elaborate timber carving covered in gold leaf application, frequently incorporating Rococo, Neoclassical, and Chippendale stylistic motifs.

These chairs typically feature carved wooden frameworks coated in gesso, finished with water or oil gilding, and fitted with traditional horsehair padding beneath woven upholstery such as damask or jacquard textiles.

Authentication involves inspecting hand-carved joint construction, pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery, evidence of red or grey bole beneath worn gilding, and natural timber shrinkage consistent with age.

A carved giltwood chair functions effectively as a statement accent piece within a hallway, beside a writing desk, or positioned in a dressing room to provide classical architectural interest.

Maintain giltwood surfaces by light dusting with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or chemical polishes that degrade gesso, while keeping fabric upholstery away from direct light sources.
