Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An amboyna dressing box is a 19th-century portable storage chest made using the highly figured burl wood of the Pterocarpus indicus tree. Historically designed to hold personal grooming items, vanity accessories, and jewellery, these boxes often featured interior compartments, brass bindings, and secure locking mechanisms.

Traditional Victorian dressing boxes were constructed from durable hardwood cores veneered with exotic woods such as amboyna, walnut, or rosewood. They frequently featured solid brass edge bindings, inlaid cartouches, flush-mounted handles, and interior linings of velvet, leather, or silk.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display dense, tightly clustered swirl patterns characteristic of natural burl wood veneer rather than printed grain. Look for signs of hand-finished joinery, age-appropriate oxidisation on brass elements, working lever locks with original keys, and natural surface wear.

An antique dressing box can be styled on a sideboard, console table, or office desk as a functional decorative object. It serves as storage for small items like keys or stationery while providing texture and warm timber tones to contemporary minimalist or traditional spaces.

Preserve amboyna veneer by keeping the item away from direct sunlight, radiator heat, and humid environments that cause timber movement. Dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the wood lustre.
