Description

French hand carved gilded mirror with it's original bevelled mirror plate, very good quality. the patina to the gilding is just lovely. there are a couple of foxing marks on the glass, but it is still crisp and clear. Great for a small space.

French giltwood mirrors are characterised by carved wooden frames coated in gesso and finished with applied gold leaf. Historically crafted during the 17th to 19th centuries, they typically feature intricate scrollwork, botanical carvings, and classical mouldings designed to capture and reflect light.

The core frame is typically constructed from softwoods such as pine or lime wood, which are hand-carved before receiving layers of gesso preparation. Fine gold leaf is then applied using water-gilding or oil-gilding techniques over a bole clay substrate.

Authentic period pieces show natural wear where the gold leaf has thinned, exposing the underlying reddish or greyish bole clay and white gesso. The reverse side often displays hand-sawn wooden backing boards, hand-forged nails, and age-related oxidisation on the reflective glass mirror plate.

A gilded mirror is frequently placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or dining room sideboard to create a visual focal point. Its warm metallic finish contrasts effectively against both neutral minimalist walls and deeply saturated contemporary colour schemes.
