This set of four Shropshire Farmhouse Clun chairs originates from the nineteenth century and is made in the rustic farmhouse style from elm and ash with a warm brown timber finish. Each side chair features solid wooden panel seats, shaped vertical back splats, turned uprights, and well-turned double front stretchers with rounded bobbin details. Visible signs of age include old worm holes, natural wear, marks, and small losses to the wood. The chairs measure 88.75 cm high, 43.75 cm wide, and 37.5 cm deep. They suit everyday domestic use around a dining table or kitchen table in a country home.

Regional vernacular chairs were crafted by local country carpenters using locally sourced hardwoods such as oak, ash, and elm. Distinct regional variations developed across British counties, featuring practical forms, turned legs, solid panel seats, and sturdy joinery tailored for daily farmhouse use.

English regional chairs were primarily constructed from native timber, predominantly oak, elm, and ash. The frames were assembled using traditional mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden dowels or pegs.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-tooled construction, slight asymmetrical variations in turned components, historical wooden pegging, and genuine surface patination acquired from decades of regular handling and wax polishing.

Vernacular chairs can be arranged around a contemporary clean-lined dining table to create visual contrast, or placed individually in entryways and bedrooms as functional architectural accents.

Care involves regular dusting with a soft cloth and periodic applications of clear beeswax paste to preserve the original patina. Chairs should be placed away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage and joint movement.
