Fine Georgian Early Regency Mahogany Carver Armchair London Circa 1800

18th century
Description

Fine Georgian Early Regency Mahogany Carver Armchair London Circa 1800

With a strong association to the prestigious Royal London maker John Gee, this chair is of exceptional quality & craftsmanship & bears the journeyman chair maker’s initials of I.C. stamped to the front rail. The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, 1660-1840, records that renowned London maker John Gee allowed his craftsmen to stamp their initials; specifically, an I.C. impressed mark is uniquely documented on verified antique furniture surviving from Gee's workshop. We have added a photograph of the stamp.

Made from dense Cuban mahogany, the chair has a good colour & patina with generous proportions & is deep front to back.

The top rail has fine, beautifully carved acanthus leaves & carved scrolling details. The centre back rail has an exquisitely turned & carved rosette. The chair has scrolling arms, bulbous turned columns joining the seat rails & stands on elegant swept sabre legs. There is a drop in seat which retains its original horsehair pad. The seat has been re-upholstered from the frame & covered in high end John Boyd woven horsehair fabric.

Fully restored in our workshop & ready for use.

Height: 83cm

Width: (at front) 53cm wide

Depth: 63cm

Height to the top of the seat: 50cm

This Georgian early Regency carver armchair dates to around 1800 from London and uses dense Cuban mahogany with a warm brown timber colour and patina. The design has a scroll top rail decorated with carved acanthus leaves, a central splat with a carved rosette, scrolling arms with bulbous turned supports joining the seat rails, and swept sabre legs. The drop-in seat contains its original horsehair pad and wears green striped woven horsehair fabric upholstery. Stamped initials I.C. appear on the front rail. The armchair measures 83 cm high, 53 cm wide, and 63 cm deep, with a seat height of 50 cm. Placing this seating piece in a study, drawing room, or hallway provides functional seating while adding period character to an interior.

A Georgian early Regency carver armchair typically features classical proportions, curved arms with turned supports, and carved cresting or central back splats. Designed primarily for the head of the dining table, these chairs reflect the transition from late 18th-century symmetry to 19th-century Neo-classical detail.

Craftsmen during the Regency period predominantly used solid mahogany for its durability and rich grain structure. Upholstered seats were commonly filled with horsehair and covered in woven wool, silk, or striped fabrics.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-carved detailing, original corner blocks beneath the seat frame, and hand-cut joinery such as mortise and tenon joints. Natural age-related patination on the mahogany frame and hand-worked underside construction further indicate period authenticity.

A single carver chair functions effectively as an accent seat in a home office, hallway, or reading nook. Pairing period mahogany seating with modern neutral decor creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Keep the mahogany frame clean by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Protect the wood and fabric upholstery from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent drying and fading.
