Handsome Pair of Country House Walnut Framed Armchairs C1860

19th century
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

Of pleasing country house scale, we have a wonderful pair of walnut framed library armchairs c1860 perfect for upholstery or maybe to use as they are. Just love the look of this pair with those almost oversized front legs, strong looking framed stance and the overall scale.

Both chairs are of great quality with a good look and currently have plaid wool upholstery in blue and oatmeal tones which is lightly worn, clean and usable if you wish. The chairs have genuine historic wear with no movement in the arms or frames, being reassuringly heavy with well sprung wide seats. They would look wonderful reupholstered which our upholsterer can do for £570 plus vat per chair and you would require approx 5 metres of fabric per chair which we can assist in sourcing, if you wish.

A fine looking pair of handsome English open framed armchairs c1860.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Carved gadrooned collars on heavy turned front legs: mid-Victorian cabinetmaking.
Brass cup casters secured with slotted screws: original Victorian fittings.
Deep spoon backs swept into carved shoulder scrolls: typical 1860s salon form.
Surface darkening and wear across the foot turnings: age and handling.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

Victorian country house armchairs from the mid-nineteenth century feature sturdy hardwood frames, deep seating, and low-slung profiles designed for comfort. They typically display turned or carved legs, padded armrests, and brass castors suited for domestic drawing rooms.

Armchairs from the 1860s were constructed using solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood for the exposed frame. Internal structures utilised coil springs, hessian webbing, and fillings such as horsehair, finished with metal or brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature dense, rich grain characteristic of antique walnut, original joinery such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, and aged patina on the timber. Metalwork like brass castors often exhibits natural oxidisation and original fitting screws.

A pair of antique armchairs can be used to anchor a main seating area opposite a contemporary sofa, providing visual balance. Reupholstering in geometric or traditional checked fabrics bridges the gap between mid-nineteenth-century frame profiles and modern colour palettes.

Exposed walnut timber should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned periodically using a high-quality beeswax paste. Upholstery requires gentle vacuuming with a brush attachment, and chairs should be kept away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
