This nineteenth-century Victorian and Gothic display cabinet is made by Gillow & Co from ebonised wood, glass, and mirror with gilt details. The black finish incorporates gold line decoration, a mirrored back panel, and an inverted break front with reeded front columns. Other visible details include open sides, glass shelves, corner arches, and a stamped maker's mark on the back. The piece stands at 101 cm high, 87 cm wide, and 40 cm deep. Suitable for display purposes in a home today, the unit provides open shelving for ornaments or collectibles in a living room, study, or hallway. The compact proportions allow placement against interior walls or within corner spaces while offering all-around visibility through the glass shelves and mirrored background.

Victorian ebonised furniture from the Aesthetic Movement features dark stain or lacquer finishes designed to imitate ebony wood. These pieces often incorporate linear gilt decoration, Japanese-inspired geometric profiles, and refined structural turned columns.

These cabinets were constructed using hardwood frameworks, such as mahogany or birch, which were stained black and lacquered. Additional materials included gilded line details, mirrored glass backing plates, and clear plate glass shelving.

Authentic pieces from prominent makers like Gillow & Co typically bear impressed maker stamps on drawer edges or back panels, precision dovetail joinery, high-grade secondary woods, and heavy-gauge original glass.

An ebonised cabinet provides a dark focal point against neutral or dark paint schemes, bridging contemporary and traditional aesthetics. Place glass objects or ceramics inside to catch the light reflected by the mirrored interior.

Clean surfaces using a dry microfiber cloth to prevent abrasion to the gilded lines. Avoid harsh chemical polishes, solvent-based cleaners, and direct sunlight exposure to preserve the lacquer integrity.
