This Victorian ebonised pier cabinet dates from 1870 and belongs to the Victorian display cabinets category. The piece is constructed from ebonised wood, glass, brass and red velvet, finished in black with marquetry inlay, ormolu mounts, a glazed door and a moulded plinth base. The cabinet stands on a rectangular plinth base and incorporates a single vertical glazed door fitted with a drop-ring handle, flanked by upright panels decorated with floral marquetry and cast brass mounts at the top and bottom corners. The frieze contains central inlaid scrollwork beneath a stepped top, while the interior reveals two shelves lined in red velvet. The cabinet measures Height 99 cm, Width 91 cm, Depth 32 cm. Suitable for use in a living room, study or hallway, the cabinet provides enclosed display space for small collections, ornaments or books. The compact depth allows positioning against narrow wall spaces, while the glazed front protects contents from dust whilst maintaining visibility from across the room.

Originating in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a pier cabinet is a low, narrow display cabinet traditionally designed to sit on a pier wall between two tall windows, often positioned beneath a matching mirror.

These cabinets typically feature ebonised or mahogany timber, detailed marquetry or inlay work, gilt-bronze mounts, clear glass panels, and fabric-lined interior shelves.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature hand-cut marquetry inlay, cast metal mounts secured with period screws, hand-planed timber backboards, and natural age-related wear to the dark surface finish.

Position the cabinet in a hallway, alcove, or living room to display curated ceramics or books, balancing its dark tone with lighter wall finishes and neutral soft furnishings.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid silicone-based polishes that can degrade delicate lacquers, and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and harsh heat sources.
