What Are Edwardian Bookcases?
Two woods dominate. Mahogany appears in 773 of 1,568 titles and oak in 418, with walnut a distant third at 128. Satinwood, rosewood, elm, pitch pine and pollard oak surface only a handful of times each. Decoration leans on inlay rather than carving: 299 titles say inlaid, 21 say carved.
Two forms split the category almost evenly. Revolving bookcases account for 355 titles, open doorless shelved cases 345. The revolving type is a rotating column on a central pivot, described by tier count, two, three or four, and turning up as a floor-standing drum or a table-top miniature. Mahogany revolving alone runs to 168 titles.
Open cases run from slim and small through to large and tall, and include graduated, waterfall, breakfront, alcove and dwarf shapes. Glazed and doored cases are a smaller group: glazed 104, cabinet 113, breakfront 67, astragal glazed 19, secretaire 21, with bookcase-on-cupboard and bookcase-on-chest in the titles. Dating is loose. Of 1,568 listings only 557 carry a clean year; 811 rely on the word Edwardian alone. Edges are thin but real, with a scatter of 1890s, 1880s, 1920s and 1930s pieces, and Georgian, Regency and eighteenth-century secretaire bookcases sitting inside the heading at the top of the range. What Sets Them Apart
Timber and figure do most of the work. Satinwood, rosewood, burr walnut and figured mahogany cluster in the upper half of the range; plain oak and pine sit at the bottom. Inlay pushes the same way, and marquetry, boxwood, ebony stringing and satinwood banding are all named on higher-priced examples.
Scale and complexity separate the ends of the range. Breakfront and library cases, large and tall examples, occupy the top, including a breakfront measured at 9ft and a two-section floor case given as 220cm wide. Small open cases, book troughs, slides and racks make up the tail at the other end.
A named maker or retailer lifts a piece, and matched groups do too. Pairs appear in 47 titles, and pairs of open bookcases, revolving cases and sectional units sit well above the single-item norm; one set of three stacking office bookcases turns up. Why do some pieces predate the Edwardian period?
