Antique Edwardian Mahogany Glazed Bookcase | Ball and Claw Feet

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique early 20th century Edwardian breakfront bookcase in mahogany in the Chippendale manner, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and carved decoration.

The front has three astragal glazed doors with geometric glazing bars, the wider central door projecting in breakfront form, each opening to adjustable shelves, giving generous display and book storage.

The moulded breakfront cornice sits above a frieze carved with blind fretwork, and the bookcase stands on six cabriole legs with shell-carved knees ending in carved ball and claw feet.

The mahogany displays a lovely figured grain and a warm, rich colour with a lovely mellow patina.

Presented in good condition commensurate with age. A very desirable low breakfront bookcase of shallow depth, ideal where space is tight, and a perfect addition to any living room, study, hallway or dining room.

This Edwardian breakfront bookcase originates from the early 20th century in the Chippendale Revival style. It is made from warm brown mahogany with a figured grain, glass panels, and brass hardware. The shallow breakfront design measures 148 cm wide, 31 cm deep, and 121 cm high. The front incorporates three glazed doors with geometric astragal glazing bars enclosing adjustable shelves. A moulded breakfront cornice sits above a frieze with carved blind fretwork decoration, and the unit stands on six cabriole legs with shell-carved knees and carved ball and claw feet. In a contemporary home, this low bookcase provides functional display and storage in tight spaces. It suits placement in a living room, study, hallway, or dining room for books and decorative objects.

Edwardian glazed bookcases date from the early 20th century and are characterised by lighter proportions than Victorian furniture, often incorporating Chippendale Revival details such as ball and claw feet, astragal glazing bars, and rich mahogany timber.

These cabinets were constructed using solid mahogany and mahogany veneers over a softwood carcass, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, glass panes secured with wooden glazing bars, and carved cabriole legs.

Authentic pieces feature original lock plates, natural timber oxidation on interior surfaces, hand-carved leg details, and astragal glazing bars with subtle period variations rather than modern machine uniformities.

Place the cabinet against a plain painted wall to highlight its silhouette, using the glass shelves to display modern art books, studio ceramics, or curio objects to contrast classic cabinetry with contemporary decor.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry, soft lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the finish, keeping the item away from direct sunlight and central heating sources.
