Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian mahogany bookcase on chest consists of a glazed upper cabinet above a lower chest of drawers, standing at 200 cm high, 123 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. The piece is rendered in a warm brown timber with a dark polish, complemented by oval brass drop handles on the oak-lined drawers and glass panes within astragal glazing bars. Architectural details include a dentil moulding and turned teardrop decoration along the cornice, while the base rests on shaped bracket feet. In a contemporary home, this two-piece cabinet provides functional storage and display space for a gentleman's library, study, or living room. The upper section houses adjustable shelving behind glazed doors for books and display items, while the four graduated drawers below offer additional enclosed storage. The modular construction allows the upper and lower sections to separate for straightforward placement in domestic interiors.

FAQs

Georgian period furniture, spanning from 1714 to 1830, is characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and extensive use of dense mahogany wood. Key features include refined wood carving, astragal glazing, and functional case furniture designs created by prominent cabinetmakers such as Thomas Chippendale and George Hepplewhite.

These pieces were predominantly crafted using solid and veneered Cuban or Honduran mahogany, alongside oak or pine for secondary internal structural woods like drawer linings. Hand-blown glass panes, cast brass backplates, and steel lock mechanisms were standard fitting materials.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer sides, hand-planed backboards, and slight irregularities in the original glass panels. Look for natural oxidation on the internal wood surfaces, historic tool marks, and original brass hardware showing age-appropriate wear.

A classic mahogany case piece adds visual weight and historical depth when contrasted against modern neutral paint palettes or minimalist architectural backdrop. It serves effectively as a focal display piece in living rooms, home offices, dining rooms, or wide entry hallways.

Position the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish fading. Clean gently with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood lustre and patination.
