Introduction

Antique Painted Bookcases

A painted bookcase is a piece whose finish is paint rather than figured timber. The carcass underneath is commonly pine. Paint did two jobs: it dressed up cheap softwood, sometimes grained or scrumbled to pass for rosewood or walnut, and at the decorative end it carried hand-painted neoclassical schemes on satinwood.

The version you'll meet most often on Sellingantiques is an English or French painted pine bookcase with open shelves. Regency waterfall shapes, Victorian open bookcases and country-house types repeat through the archive. Glazed pieces run second, with glass doors over the shelves. Kitchen dressers, housekeeper's cupboards, buffets and vitrines all sit under the same heading, because they're painted.

Dating is broad. The field runs from 1745 to 1930, but nearly half the category is dated only to a century or a reign, with '19th Century' the single largest entry and Victorian next. Where a decade is given it tends to fall in the 1880s, 1890s, 1900s or 1920s. Regency and 18th-century pieces are the smaller groups.

Around 43 come up a year, handled by 82 different dealers, so this is a category spread thinly rather than held by a few specialists. Continental pieces beyond France are scarce: Swedish, Danish, Dutch, Italian, Spanish and Austrian each turn up only once or twice.

What sets them apart

Top And Bottom

Paint is the first divide. Titles reading 'original paint' or 'in the original paint' cluster at the upper end, where the surface is the one first applied. Lower down sit 'later painted', 'later paint finish' and pieces offered ready to wax or paint. Scraped paint, with layers partly taken back to earlier colour, is its own recurring seam.

Then the timber and the decoration. A plain painted pine bookcase is the base of the range. A satinwood breakfront display cabinet with astragal glazing and hand-painted decoration is the ceiling, and there are only 17 of those in the archive. Between them sit the grained and scrumbled finishes, paint imitating another material.

Scale and number do the rest. Breakfront and library bookcases dominate the upper part of the range, as do the earliest pieces, the George III and 18th-century examples including the 1745 painted pine breakfront. Pairs matter too: pairs of library bookcases and pier cabinets sit near the top.

The Antique Painted Bookcases Glossary

Open bookcase
Shelves with no doors or glass across the front. The commonest form in this category.
Glazed
Fitted with glass doors, so what's inside is visible but shut away. Astragal, sometimes written astral, means the glass is divided into small panes by moulded glazing bars.
Breakfront
A front whose centre section projects forward of the sections either side. Used constantly of the larger library and display pieces.
Waterfall bookcase
Open shelves that step down in width or depth from the top shelf to the bottom. A Regency shape that recurs throughout.
Scrumbled
A dragged or combed paint finish worked to imitate figured timber. Sits alongside simulated graining and faux rosewood in the same seam of the archive.
Deux corps
A two-part cupboard, the upper section standing on the lower one. Turns up on French buffets listed here.
Questions people ask

Antique Painted Bookcases: Frequently Asked Questions

Are these all actually bookcases?

No. The heading covers painted shelved and cabinet furniture generally, so kitchen dressers, cupboards, housekeeper's and larder cupboards, buffets, armoires and vitrines all appear.

What they share is the painted surface rather than the function. Bookcases still dominate, with open shelved pine the single commonest form.

What does original paint mean in these titles?

It means the surface is the one first applied, rather than a later repaint. The phrase recurs through the upper end of the archive.

Against it you'll see 'later painted' and 'later paint finish', and some pieces are offered as ready to wax or paint.

How old are painted bookcases usually?

The dated listings run from 1745 to 1930, and nothing falls outside that span.

Only a portion carry a clean year. The largest single period entry is the unspecific '19th Century', with Victorian next, so a lot of the category is placed to a century or a reign rather than a decade.

Which are the most expensive kinds?

Satinwood breakfront display cabinets with astragal glazing and hand-painted neoclassical decoration form a tight pocket at the top, just 17 titles across the archive.

Large library and breakfront bookcases, 18th-century and George III pieces, and pairs also sit high. Plain painted pine sits at the other end.

Do painted bookcases come in pairs?

Pairs appear in 24 titles, commoner than you might expect for furniture this size.

Pairs of library bookcases and pier cabinets tend to sit near the ceiling of the range.

Where do these pieces come from?

English is the commonest description by some way, followed by French. Louis Philippe bookcases, buffets deux corps and armoire cabinets carry the French side.

Other origins are thin on the ground. Swedish, Danish, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Austrian and Scottish or Irish attributions each appear only once or twice.
