Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century English painted narrow pine bookcase originates from the English Country style tradition. The piece stands at 247 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, offering practical storage with a twenty-three centimetre shelf depth. Painted in an off-white cream finish, the cabinet displays a moulded cornice, astragal glazing bars across the upper glass door, and a single panelled cupboard door at the base. Inside the glazed upper section, a contrasting dark ribbed interior backing appears alongside delicate metal hardware and small round knobs on both doors. Placed in a reception room, study, or hallway today, this upright display unit suits spaces requiring compact storage for books or decorative items. The timber construction shows gentle signs of aged wear across the painted surface, lending a traditional country house aesthetic. Supported by bracket feet with an arched apron beneath the lower cabinet, the structure combines upper display shelving with lower concealed storage while maintaining a narrow footprint.

FAQs

Painted bookcases gained popularity in 18th and 19th century Britain as a way to lighten interiors and emulate fine lacquered or soft-toned European furniture styles. These pieces often featured glazed upper doors to display books or porcelain alongside solid lower cupboards for concealed storage.

Most traditional English painted bookcases are constructed from softwoods such as pine or hardwoods like oak, featuring mortise and tenon joints, hand-cut dovetails, and glazed doors with timber mullions. Paint finishes were historically applied using milk paint or oil-based pigments over gesso bases.

Authentic examples typically show natural wear on contact points, shrinkage gaps in solid wood backboards, cast brass hardware, and glass panels with slight irregularities. Later paint coats often reveal original finishes or underlying timber grain upon close inspection.

A narrow glazed cabinet provides vertical interest in alcoves, dining spaces, or hallways without consuming substantial floor space. Highlighting the interior by contrasting displayed ceramics or leather-bound volumes against a dark painted back panel creates depth within contemporary rooms.

Keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber movement and flaking paint. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleansers or water, using a light coat of neutral beeswax sparingly on unpainted timber areas.
