Antique Pine Bookcases
Pine was the cheap timber. It went into shelving and storage for houses, kitchens, offices, schools and institutions from the eighteenth century onward, usually meant to be painted or grained rather than left bare. Much of it was fitted or semi-fitted joinery, which is why the surviving stock blurs into dressers, cupboards and wall shelving.
The form you'll meet most often is a Victorian or loosely 19th-century open-fronted bookcase: shelves, no doors. Glazed and part-glazed cabinets run alongside it in similar numbers, glass to the top and solid doors or drawers below. Waterfall bookcases, graduated and widest at the base, form a smaller pocket and often carry a Regency label.
A fifth of everything filed under this heading is a dresser, and another large group is cupboards, so a search for a bookcase turns up a great deal of kitchen furniture. Pitch pine, denser and more strongly figured, appears in a run of titles, often on Scottish, ecclesiastical or institutional pieces.
Dating is loose. Only a third of listings carry a clean year, and Victorian and 19th Century between them cover about half of the dated entries, placing a piece inside a hundred-year window rather than a decade. Early twentieth-century decade labels are common. The dated field runs 1745 to 1940 and works as dealer shorthand.
What Sets Them Apart
Scale and architecture do most of the work. Breakfront and library bookcases, double bookcases and large sets sit far above the middle, while a plain pine bookcase of ordinary size sits at the foot. Gothic, castellated, carved pedimented and astragal-glazed descriptors turn up only on the dearer entries.
Surface is the other big lever, and it's named in titles more often than any joinery detail. Original paint, original cream paint and paint still in place run through the upper reaches. Later paint, stripped-to-bare-wood and wax-over-paint finishes sit lower down. Limed and scrumbled surfaces appear occasionally.
After that, it's origin and date. West Country, Scottish, Irish, Swedish, Danish and French attributions cluster in the upper half.
