19th Century Pine Glazed Dresser/housekeepers Cupboard C.1880

19th century
Description

A charming late 19th-century pine glazed cupboard, dating to approximately 1880, with attractive proportions, a warm honey-coloured finish and a wonderfully rustic country-house character.

Constructed principally in solid pine, the cupboard features a moulded projecting cornice above a pair of glazed doors, opening to reveal three internal shelves, providing generous display space for china, glassware, books or decorative objects. Cmes with keys both to top and bottom.

The lower section incorporates a pair of traditional panelled cupboard doors, enclosing further useful storage, all standing on a substantial plinth base.

Of particular appeal is the beautifully figured pine, displaying natural knots, pronounced grain and the mellow colour acquired through many years of use. The simple, practical construction and restrained detailing are characteristic of 19th-century country furniture.

Retaining its traditional iron hinges and period-style locking furniture, the cupboard has an appealing, unpretentious quality.

Condition: Presented in country-house condition, with age-related wear, marks, variations in colour and evidence of historic use throughout. The interior shows signs of previous use, particularly within the lower cupboard. These imperfections contribute to its rustic character.

An attractive and highly practical piece of antique country furniture, equally suited to a farmhouse kitchen, dining room, pantry or informal sitting room.

Date of Manufacture

Marlborough Antiques & Interiors has dated this Victorian Glazed Pine Dresser to the 1880s.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Planked backboards: rough-sawn pine with dark natural oxidisation from over a century of exposure.
Door frames: traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery showing shrinkage around the fielded panels.
Cornice moulding: hand-shaped pine with minor joint separation at the mitres from timber movement.
Iron butt hinges: surface patination and slotted screw fixings typical of late Victorian joinery.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

A housekeepers cupboard is a substantial item of storage furniture traditionally used in 19th-century households and kitchens to store linens, dry goods, and tableware behind solid or glazed doors.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid Scots pine or European pine using hand-cut dovetail joints, tongue-and-groove backboards, mortise-and-tenon door frames, and glass panes set within glazed timber frames.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-planed timber surfaces, original cast or stamped ironmongery, hand-fitted glass panes, and genuine surface wear around handles, keyholes, and base runners.

Position the piece in a kitchen, dining area, or living room as a freestanding display cabinet filled with neutral ceramics, glassware, or books to complement contemporary architectural elements with natural wood textures.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, ensuring the piece is positioned away from direct heat radiators and high humidity.
