Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This late 19th-century English country house bookcase brings practical storage and traditional character to a living room, study or hallway. Built from pine with glass, paint and metal hardware, the piece wears a soft sage green finish across its entire exterior. The upper section comprises two glazed doors with simple wooden framing, opening to reveal internal shelving, while the lower base cabinet presents two solid panelled doors. Moulded cornices frame the top and a solid plinth base grounds the lower cabinet, complemented by small circular metal keyhole escutcheons on the doors. Standing 215.5 cm high, 126 cm wide and 47.5 cm deep, this tall freestanding cabinet provides generous vertical display space above concealed lower storage. It suits a traditional interior where books, decorative ceramics or glassware require orderly containment behind protective glass panels, paired with closed lower storage for everyday items.

FAQs

Originating in the 18th and 19th centuries, English painted glazed bookcases typically combine an upper glass-fronted display section for literature or porcelain with a solid enclosed cupboard base for storage.

Traditional examples are constructed primarily from softwoods such as pine or hardwoods such as oak, finished with hand-applied paint, and fitted with mouth-blown glass panes and iron or brass escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original blown glass displaying natural imperfections or waves, and uneven paint wear consistent with historic usage and age.

Position the piece as a focal point in a dining room or living space, pairing its painted finish with modern ceramics, framed artwork, or structured book arrangements to balance classic proportions with contemporary aesthetics.

Dust surfaces regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid applying harsh solvent cleaners that could strip historical paint layers, and preserve the timber frame by maintaining stable humidity levels.
