Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE EDWARDIAN ERA:
Bevelled edge following the shield profile: mirrors made around 1900.
Composition husk and swag ornament on wood: late Victorian and Edwardian decorative work.
Gilding rubbed through to white gesso on the outer rim: decades of dusting.
Fine joints visible across the shaped border: timber frame construction beneath the moulding.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Edwardian wall mirror displays an Edwardian Neoclassical Revival style with a distinctive shield shape. The frame uses giltwood and gesso finished in a warm gold colour, complemented by clear mirror glass. Decorative elements include carved draped swags descending from upper finials, a central rosette crest at the top, and detailed beaded moulding along the tapered inner edge. The gilded surfaces show subtle variations in tone reflecting traditional hand-finishing techniques. Measuring 107 cm high, 78 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, this vertical hanging piece fits well into domestic spaces. It suits placement in an entrance hallway above a console table or in a dining room above a sideboard to reflect light and enhance interior proportions.

Originating in the early 20th century, these mirrors feature a silhouette inspired by heraldic shields and Neoclassical revival design, often embellished with carved drapery swags and central rosette crests.

Frames were typically carved from timber, coated with layers of gesso clay, and finished with hand-applied gold leaf before housing silvered mirror glass plates.

Authentic pieces display subtle wear on the gilding showing the reddish bole clay beneath, natural age distressing on the mirrored plate, and hand-fitted wood backboards.

Positioning the mirror above a modern sideboard or hallway console table creates a elegant focal point that balances historic ornamentation with contemporary lines.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft dry brush to prevent damage to the gold leaf, and apply glass cleaner to a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror plate.
