Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Swept armrests worn to bare wood on the grips: long use and handling.
Pegged tenon joints at the seat frame: period joinery before modern adhesives.
Crossed arrow splat with central boss: regional design from south Devon.
Arched front stretcher: formed by hand to support the lower frame.
Traditional rush seat woven envelope-style: vernacular upholstery practice.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 18th century Georgian vernacular armchair originates from Yealmpton and follows a rare model constructed from painted wood and rush. The timber has a dark brown painted finish showing visible signs of age and wear across the surface. Distinctive decorative details include an X-frame lattice back with arrow-shaped splats, curved open arms, a woven natural rush seat, and turned stretchers including a uniquely shaped front stretcher. Measuring 85 cm in height, 60 cm in width, and 54 cm in depth with a 45 cm seat height, it offers an ample and comfortable seat. Suitable for rustic farmhouse interiors, this antique chair functions as a practical seating option around a dining table, beside a desk, or as an accent piece in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. The original structural integrity remains strong, complete with its intact rush seating and traditional construction.

Originating in the South Hams region of Devon, England, during the 18th century, the Yealmpton armchair is a regional style of vernacular seating characterised by its distinctive lattice or X-frame back design and woven rush seat.

These chairs were typically constructed using locally sourced native British hardwoods such as ash, beech, or oak, often finished with dark paint or dark stain, and fitted with hand-woven rush seats.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery, slightly asymmetrical turned elements, natural wear patterns to the original painted surface, and genuine surface patination on lower stretchers.

A Georgian painted armchair can serve as a focal accent piece in a contemporary hallway, living space, or study, pairing well alongside minimalist or neutral upholstered furnishings.

Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture, dust the wooden frame with a dry soft cloth, and clean the rush seat periodically using a low-suction brush attachment.
