A border glass mirror, also referred to as a margin mirror, features a central mirror plate surrounded by a ring of secondary peripheral glass panels. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these classical designs frequently incorporate decorative architectural motifs such as urns, swags, and scrollwork.

Victorian gilt mirrors were typically crafted with carved wooden frames or molded composition ornament applied over a softwood sub-frame. The surface was finished with gesso and gold leaf gilding or bronze powder, framing silvered or mercury glass plates.

Authentic 19th-century mirrors generally display original mercurial or early silvering with subtle foxing and edge desilvering on the mirror back. The reverse typically features hand-sawn timber backing boards, while the gilded exterior exhibits subtle age wear and exposed red or grey bole beneath the gesso.

Positioning the mirror above a contemporary console table or fireplace mantel creates an architectural focal point. The reflective margin glass enhances natural light, while the classical silhouette provides formal contrast against neutral or dark paint schemes.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent disturbing delicate gilding. Clean the glass with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water, ensuring liquid does not seep between the glass frame joints or touch the gilded finish.
