This 19th-century Victorian cheval mirror belongs to the English Country House style, constructed from satin birch with a warm honey finish, glass and brass. The uprights are turned, the mirror frame has an arched top with shaped upper corners, the base stands on splayed feet, and adjustable brass thumbscrews secure the swinging frame. The timber exhibits a figured grain, and the base incorporates a shaped stretcher uniting the two legs. Measuring 167 cm in height, 86 cm in width and 48 cm in depth with a 120 by 58 cm mirror plate, this full-length cheval mirror suits placement in a bedroom or dressing room for daily personal use.

A cheval mirror is a full-length dressing mirror mounted within a frame with dual upright posts, named after the French word for horse due to its four-legged support structure. Originating in the late 18th century, these mirrors became staple bedroom fixtures throughout the 19th century.

Nineteenth-century cheval mirrors were commonly constructed from figured hardwoods such as satin birch, mahogany, and rosewood. The frames featured mortise and tenon joinery, turned pillars, and brass friction joints or thumbscrews to secure the tilting mechanism.

Authentic 19th-century examples display original mercury or silvered mirror glass with light surface oxidisation, hand-carved details or turnings, and natural age patina on the timber. Checking for period-appropriate brass hardware, square-cut screws, and shrinkage splits on backboards also helps confirm age.

A tall cheval mirror can be placed in a bedroom suite, dressing area, or spacious hallway to reflect light and create spatial depth. Pairing rich figured timber with clean-lined modern upholstery or neutral walls creates a balanced visual contrast.

Clean the timber using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin coat of natural beeswax annually to preserve the finish. Avoid harsh glass cleaners containing ammonia on antique mirror plates, applying cleaner to a cloth rather than directly onto the glass.
