19th century
Description

Grand Tour - Late 19th Century walnut Swiss black forest mirror.

Modelled as a temple ruins, with classical columns and decorated with a palm tree, on an easel stand.

The label on the back of the mirror reads "Ch. H. Schuh, Interlaken".

Interlakens Royal connection: Queen Victoria's extended 1868 Swiss holiday cemented Interlaken's status as the ultimate fashionable retreat for elite British travellers on their Grand Tours.

Can be used standing or hanging.

Height 46cm x 34cm wide

Christian Schuh founded initially in 1818, "Schuh" evolved into a high-end establishment on Interlaken’s famous Höheweg promenade, today known as the famous ‘Grand Café Restaurant Schuh’. During the golden era of European grand tourism (mid-1800s to early 1900s), Interlaken served as the primary resort hub for wealthy travellers visiting the Swiss Alps. The boutique catered to these affluent tourists by retailing premier Swiss crafts, high-end souvenirs, and local artisan work alongside their famous confectionery. While "Schuh" acted as the elite storefront/distributor, they sourced their masterfully carved wooden furnishings from legendary carvers located just across Lake Brienz. Despite the name "Black Forest," the finest and most detailed of these pieces were actually carved by master woodworkers in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, centered around the town of Brienz, near Interlaken.

This late 19th-century Swiss Black Forest table mirror is made from dark brown walnut and glass, measuring 46 cm high by 34 cm wide. Modelled as temple ruins, the Victorian and Gothic style frame incorporates architectural columns, a carved palm tree, and foliate leaf carvings surrounding the central rectangular mirror glass. It stands on an easel support, with a label on the back reading "Ch. H. Schuh, Interlaken". The piece shows natural surface grain variation and aged wear on the wood and glass. Suitable for use on a sideboard top or dresser, it can be displayed standing or hanging in a hallway, bedroom, or living space.

Originating in Brienz, Switzerland, during the early nineteenth century, Black Forest wood carving developed into a celebrated craft where artisans produced detailed naturalistic and architectural decorative objects, frequently purchased by travellers on the European Grand Tour.

These items were predominantly carved from native European hardwoods, particularly dense walnut or lime wood, finished with deep wood stains and fitted with bevelled mirror glass plates.

Genuine period examples display hand-tool marks, intricate three-dimensional undercutting in the carved foliage or figures, natural timber oxidation, and period-appropriate joinery on the backboard.

Positioning a carved timber mirror atop a console table, mantelpiece, or bookshelf introduces rich botanical texture and architectural structure that pairs well with both classic and contemporary decor schemes.

Dust the detailed carvings regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush. Periodically apply a natural beeswax polish to protect the timber, while ensuring cleaning fluids do not contact the wood finish.
