Pair Sheraton Revival Satinwood Bergere Library Chairs, 1890

1900 - 1920
Description

A striking pair of Edwardian Sheraton Revival satinwood bergère library armchairs, combining elegant classical lines with richly decorative detail. Each chair features a shaped, arched back and finely caned panels across the back, sides and seat, framed by warm-toned satinwood. The backrests are hand-painted with delicate floral garlands and scrolling foliage, centred by a portrait medallion of a classical lady. Further painted ornament enriches the front rails, arm terminals and square front blocks, which are accented with floral roundels. Slender, reeded front legs and graceful swept rear legs lend the chairs a light, refined stance. The generously proportioned seats are fitted with pale yellow floral cushions, adding softness and a pleasing contrast to the dark cane and glowing wood. Decorative yet inviting, this pair of chairs would make an elegant focal point in a library, drawing room or refined reading corner.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Edwardian Sheraton Revival satinwood bergère library armchairs exhibits elegant classical lines alongside decorative detail. Each chair possesses a shaped, arched back and finely caned panels across the back, sides, and seat, framed by warm-toned satinwood. The backrests display hand-painted delicate floral garlands and scrolling foliage, centred by a portrait medallion depicting a classical lady. Further painted ornament enriches the front rails, arm terminals, and square front blocks, which bear floral roundels. Slender, reeded front legs and graceful swept rear legs lend the chairs a light, refined stance. The generously proportioned seats include pale yellow floral cushions, adding softness and contrast to the dark cane and glowing wood. Each chair measures 106 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. Decorative yet inviting, this pair of chairs functions as an elegant focal point in a library, drawing room, or refined reading corner. The combination of warm honey brown satinwood, intricate caning, and pale yellow fabric upholstery creates a traditional English Country House aesthetic. The craftsmanship incorporates turned elements on the legs, delicate painted portrait medallions, and carved details that complement the historic design lineage. These armchairs provide comfortable seating while contributing a notable historical visual element to interior spaces.

Sheraton Revival furniture, popular in late 19th-century Britain, draws inspiration from Thomas Sheratons late 18th-century designs, characterised by delicate proportions, straight lines, satinwood veneers, and hand-painted decorative motifs.

Antique bergere chairs typically feature exposed timber framessuch as satinwood, mahogany, or giltwoodfitted with woven cane panels on the sides and back, alongside upholstered seat cushions filled with natural padding.

Look for hand-painted details showing subtle brushwork variations, traditional joinery, hand-carved fluting on turned legs, and natural wood grain visible beneath historical varnishes.

These lightweight armchairs function effectively as accent seating in a formal drawing room, flanking a fireplace, or positioned alongside a desk in a home library.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid direct sunlight to prevent paint fading or wood warping, and clean cane panels using a slightly damp cloth to retain moisture.
