Antique English 17th Century Cromwellian Oak & Leather Office Desk Chair (Circa 1670)

17th century
Description

This is a good quality and rare antique English 17th century oak armchair, with a Cromwellian design influence, constructed from solid oak, and newly upholstered in green buttoned leather, circa 1670, in excellent condition.

A Rare 17th Century Oak Armchair:

The Cromwellian period followed the English Civil War. As a result, social upheaval and Puritan values brought a shift towards severe, plain designs. Ornament fell away in favour of dark, boxy and sturdy furniture. Instead, makers focused on simple, useful forms. For example, chairs often had turned legs with leather seats and backs, or took the form of the “backstool”.

From Occasional Armchair to Antique Oak Desk Chair:

This mid to late 17th century oak chair started life as an occasional armchair. At first, it stood in the home of a wealthy household. Today, however, it would make an ideal antique oak desk chair or office chair. It also has a wide seat, so it gives you plenty of room to sit.

Green Leather Upholstery & Brass Studwork:

The chair now has new upholstery in traditional materials, completed to a professional standard. It uses top quality, full-grain antique green leather. On top of this, deep buttoning runs across both the seat and the backrest. Hand-tacked brass studs then trace the edge of the solid oak frame. Underneath, a traditional hessian backing finishes the seat. The seat and backrest feel firm. Even so, they give plenty of support when you sit at a desk for long periods.

Barley Twist Legs & Pegged Oak Frame:

Turned spindles support the straight arms. These also have leather upholstery and brass studs. Below, the chair stands on barley twist legs. Barley twist stretchers then join the legs for extra strength. In addition, the frame uses mortise and tenon joints, held with wooden pegs.

Condition Report:

There are nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the frame and seat. However, these are minor, given the age of the chair. The new upholstery meets a professional standard and uses top quality, full-grain antique green leather. Hand-tacked brass studs finish the edge. As a result, the leather is in excellent condition, with no wear and tear, damage or holes. The frame has had a full strip-down, tightening and re-gluing. In addition, the oak exterior has had a thorough clean and a hand French polish to a professional standard. Therefore, the colour and patination are excellent. The chair sits on small replacement bun feet, which are in good condition. Overall, this antique oak chair is solid in joint and ready to use.

This antique English 17th century desk chair dates from circa 1670 and follows a Cromwellian design influence. It comprises a solid oak frame with a hand French polished dark brown finish, complemented by new full-grain dark green leather upholstery. The piece features deep-buttoned cushioning across the seat and backrest, lined with hand-tacked brass studding along the edges. The construction incorporates straight upholstered arms supported by turned spindles, alongside barley-twist legs and matching stretchers joined by mortise and tenon joints with wooden pegs. Nominal old use marks appear on the leading edges of the frame. The chair measures 89.5 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 51 cm deep. It functions as an ideal desk or office chair in a gentleman's library or study within a home today.

Seating from this era features straightforward rectangular frames, dark English oak, geometric turnings such as barley twist legs, and durable leather upholstery secured with decorative brass studs.

Craftsmen utilised solid English oak for the frame, joined with traditional mortise and tenon joints, complemented by heavy hide leather, horsehair padding, and hand-forged brass studding.

Look for irregular hand-carved barley-twist turnings, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, historical wear on footrests, and natural shrinkage or oxidisation in the oak grain.

Position the chair beside a contemporary minimalist desk or alongside a tailored sofa in a home library to create a textured focal point using historical contrast.

Clean the oak with a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax periodically, while nourishing the leather with a specialist conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
