Description

Pair of Mid-19th Century English Rosewood Rococo Revival Open Armchairs, c.1850–1865

A fine and particularly elegant pair of mid-19th century English rosewood open armchairs, dating to circa 1850–1865, beautifully executed in the Rococo Revival taste and retaining their original frames in exceptional condition.

Each chair features a generously proportioned, oval upholstered back, surmounted by an intricately carved and pierced ribbon and bow crest, with further scrolling foliate decoration to the shoulders. The gracefully shaped open arms incorporate upholstered rests and sweeping supports, flowing into a serpentine seat rail raised on finely moulded cabriole front legs with castors.

The beautifully figured rosewood frames display a rich, warm colour and attractive natural patina, with the fluid curves and restrained carving demonstrating the quality of their original craftsmanship.

Both chairs have been professionally reupholstered using traditional methods in an elegant silver silk damask, with a subtle woven floral design and finely applied decorative braid. The pale upholstery provides a particularly attractive contrast against the richly coloured rosewood, complementing the chairs' graceful proportions and decorative character.

A wonderfully decorative and comfortable pair of Victorian armchairs, equally suited to a period drawing room, elegant sitting room or sophisticated contemporary interior. Their generous proportions, exceptional original condition and beautifully executed upholstery make them a particularly appealing pair.

Rococo Revival emerged in the mid-19th century, drawing inspiration from 18th-century French Louis XV designs. It features sinuous C-scrolls, S-scrolls, floral carvings, cabriole legs, and naturalistic ornamentation executed in dense dark hardwoods.

Craftsmen primarily utilised dense, highly figured dark woods such as rosewood, walnut, and mahogany. Upholstery traditionally consisted of horsehair padding covered in woven silk damasks, brocades, or velvet.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved crestings and leg details, dark chocolate-toned rosewood with natural grain variations, hand-dovetailed or mortise-and-tenon joinery, and original brass wheel castors fitted to the front legs.

These decorative open armchairs function as accent seating in formal living rooms, bedrooms, or entrance halls. Their dark timber frames and sculpted silhouettes contrast cleanly against modern minimal architecture and neutral colour palettes.

Maintain rosewood by dusting with a soft microfiber cloth and applying beeswax occasionally to prevent timber desiccation. Upholstery should be kept out of direct sunlight to avoid fabric fading and vacuumed gently using a brush attachment.
