This 19th-century French Louis XVI mirror stands 176 cm high and 73 cm wide, functioning either as a freestanding leaner mirror or wall-hung piece. The rectangular wooden frame bears a real gold leaf finish on gesso with a warm gold colour, decorated with a carved bow and ribbon cresting at the top, corner rosettes, and a beaded inner moulding framing the heavy bevelled glass plate. It includes its original backboards and exhibits original foxing in one specific area while the remaining reflection stays completely clear. Placed in an empty corner, dressing room or bedroom today, the full-length mirror provides practical reflection while the classic neoclassical style integrates into traditional or transitional interior schemes. The tall vertical format and architectural ornamentation suit placement against a tall wall or freestanding on the floor to amplify light in a room.

Louis XVI style mirrors emerged in France during the late 18th century, drawing inspiration from classical antiquity. They feature symmetrical lines, Neoclassical motifs such as ribbon bows, pearls, and fluting, and gilded wood frames with refined proportions.

These mirrors were crafted from hand-carved pine or lime wood, coated with gesso, and finished using water gilding with gold leaf. The reflective plates were traditionally made with mercury or silvered glass, often incorporating bevelled edges.

Genuine period pieces display age-appropriate wear to the gilding, revealing red or grey clay bole beneath the gold leaf. The backboards typically consist of hand-sawn timber panels, and original glass plates may feature subtle pitting or oxidisation.

A full-length gilt mirror can be leaned against a bedroom or hallway wall to reflect natural light and create a sense of vertical space. Placing it opposite a window highlights architectural features while providing a focal point alongside minimal modern furnishings.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding liquids or chemical solvents which strip delicate gold leaf. Clean the glass plate carefully with a damp lint-free cloth, keeping moisture away from the gilt edges.
