This nineteenth-century Regency decorative box is fashioned from rich brown rosewood with boxwood stringing along the edges and a shaped, hinged lid. The exterior features polished mother-of-pearl crescent inlays at each corner on the front, back, and sides, alongside a central brass keyhole escutcheon. Circular black side ring handles provide carrying options, and the surface displays visible signs of natural age and wear in the timber grain. The piece measures 12.5 cm wide by 9 cm deep by 9 cm high. In a contemporary home, this gentleman's library accessory sits neatly on a sideboard top to store small trinkets, keys, or jewellery. The compact proportions allow placement on a desk, mantelpiece, or dressing table. The traditional materials and refined decorative motifs integrate smoothly into classical interiors and eclectic decorative schemes alike.

Boxes from this era are defined by their use of highly figured, rich timber, often accented with delicate mother-of-pearl, bone, or brass inlays. They typically feature clean geometric forms, domed or sarcophagus-shaped lids, and precision-fitted interior compartments.

Craftsmen predominantly used solid or veneered rosewood, mahogany, and walnut for the primary casing. Decorative elements frequently incorporated boxwood stringing, ivory or mother-of-pearl escutcheons, and brass side handles or feet.

Authentic pieces show distinct natural grain patterns characteristic of genuine rosewood, original mortise-and-tenon or dovetail joinery, and hand-cut keyhole escutcheons. Age-appropriate wear to the underside base and hand-tooled hardware also indicate authenticity.

An antique box functions well on a sideboard, coffee table, or desk to store small items while adding visual warmth. Placing it alongside contemporary ceramics or framed art creates a layered, curated aesthetic.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent timber movement or inlay lifting.
