Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Regency overmantel mirror dates from the 19th century and brings architectural elegance to a reception room or study. The frame is finished in gold giltwood and gesso, showing a breakfront cornice adorned with ball moulding and a carved lattice frieze. Three glass plates are set within the framework, flanked by twin cluster columns with Corinthian capitals. The piece measures 74 cm high and 119 cm wide. Positioned above a fireplace mantel in a living room, dining room or bedroom, the mirror reflects light and adds period character to an interior. The reflective surfaces and traditional ornamentation suit classic and formal decorative schemes.

FAQs

Originating in the early 19th century, Regency overmantel mirrors typically feature low, wide rectangular proportions designed specifically to sit above a fireplace hearth, often styled with neoclassical architectural elements such as columns, pilasters, and breakfront cornices.

These frames were constructed with carved timber backs, often pine or oak, coated in layers of gesso and finished with leaf gilding, set with hand-cut mercury or silvered mirror glass plates.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of age such as natural oxidation or dark spots (foxing) on the mirror glass, joinery marks on the reverse timber panel, and gentle wear to the gold leaf revealing the underlying red bole or white gesso layer.

Position the mirror centrally above a living room chimney breast, a dining room sideboard, or an entryway console table to reflect natural light and introduce depth into both traditional and modern schemes.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a soft, dry camel hair brush, avoiding water, spray cleaners, or chemical polishes which can erode the thin gold leaf and damage the water-soluble gesso ground.
