Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large set of twelve English country dining chairs includes ten standard chairs and two carvers dating from 1920. Constructed from warm brown oak with woven rush seats, the suite displays shaped horizontal ladder back slats, neatly turned front legs, and pad feet. Each piece presents an even dark timber grain with visible natural wear across the rush seating and wooden framing. Ideal for positioning around a generous dining table in a country kitchen or rustic farmhouse dining room, the standard chairs stand 94 cm high by 48 cm wide with a 46 cm seat height, while the carvers measure 107 cm high by 56 cm wide with arm heights of 51 cm. The substantial seating arrangement provides practical everyday utility and traditional character for formal family meals or large gatherings in a period home today.

FAQs

Ladder back chairs, characterised by horizontal wooden slats running between two vertical uprights on the backrest, gained widespread popularity in 17th and 18th century Britain as sturdy country furniture.

These chairs are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, ash, or elm, paired with seats woven from natural rush or sea grass for durability.

Authentic traditional examples feature hand-turned legs, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, shaped back slats that contour to the spine, and natural wear patterns on the stretchers where feet rested.

A set of ladder back chairs pairs effectively with a large scrubbed pine or oak dining table, bridging heritage aesthetics with contemporary farmhouse or country kitchen styling.

To preserve oak chairs with rush seats, dust the wooden frame regularly with a dry cloth, apply beeswax annually, and gently vacuum the rush seat using a soft brush attachment while avoiding excess water.
