Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This 1870 Regency tea caddy uses a dark brown rosewood timber accented by lighter boxwood and fruitwood inlays. The dual cylindrical form measures 11.5 cm high, 23.5 cm wide, and 12.5 cm deep, presenting a figure-of-eight profile joined with a top hinge. Delicate line inlay forms a cross-hatched grid pattern around the body of the containers, while the flat fitted lids display detailed marquetry vignettes depicting figural scenes framed by floral garlands. Circular wooden mouldings edge the top rims and the flat circular bases. Positioned on a sideboard top, this decorative object suits a living room or dining room as a traditional display piece or storage container for small personal items. The dark timber grain offers a rich contrast against the pale geometric lines and decorative top panels, fitting easily into classic interior schemes.

FAQs

Tea caddies were designed in the 17th to 19th centuries to hold dried tea leaves securely, often equipped with lock and key mechanisms due to the high cost of imported tea at the time.

Craftsmen predominantly utilised exotic timber veneers such as rosewood, mahogany, and satinwood, frequently detailing them with boxwood inlay, mother-of-pearl, tortoise shell, or zinc foil linings.

Authentic pieces generally display fine hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct brass or bone fittings, natural surface wear, and interior evidence of original foil lining or tea staining.

An antique caddy functions as a refined accent piece on a sideboard, bookshelf, or mantelpiece, providing tactile warmth and historical interest when paired with contemporary art or ceramic vessels.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to preserve the original finish.
