This George II Irish pair of oak scabello hall chairs dates from circa 1740 in the Georgian period and follows a traditional sculptural sgabello form. Made from oak with a dark brown finish, the chairs feature shaped backs set with painted armorial crests of the O'Shee family depicting a black swan and the legend 'Vincit Veritas', above shaped seats with dished centres and silhouette-shaped slab fronts with circular dished panels. Visible signs of age include surface wear and scuffs to the dark timber finish. Each chair measures 99.1 cm high, 44.5 cm wide, and 48.3 cm deep. These chairs suit placement as striking hall or accent seating within an English country house interior.

Originating in Renaissance Italy and revived in 18th-century Europe, sgabello chairs are armless timber chairs constructed with carved support trestles and vertical backrests, historically placed in entrance halls.

Period hall chairs were crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, joined using mortise-and-tenon construction, and often finished with hand-painted coats of arms or crests.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-planed timber, pegged joinery, period-appropriate patination, and wear on the leg bases consistent with age.

These sculptural wooden chairs function well when positioned on either side of an entryway console table or arranged as accent seating in hallways and alcoves.

Clean surfaces regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally, taking care to avoid abrasive cleaners on painted armorial details.
