This Regency painted elbow chair has neat proportions and retains its original black and white painted decoration. The dark timber frame exhibits a woven rush seat, turned tapering legs with toupe feet, and turned stretchers. White line decoration covers the entire frame, complementing the top rail which displays a hand-painted motif of a tied ribbon and sprays of wheatsheaves above an X-shaped splat with outswept arms and turned supports. It measures 82.6 cm high, 53.3 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. Suitable for use in a living room, study, or bedroom, the chair functions well as a decorative yet practical seating option. The construction accommodates everyday use while displaying traditional craftsmanship from circa 1820. Wear commensurate with age and use appears across the piece, maintaining its original character within a home setting.

Regency painted furniture, popular in the early nineteenth century, typically features light wooden frames painted dark or ebonised to simulate costly woods like ebony, adorned with hand-painted gilt, penwork, or classical brushwork motifs.

These chairs were commonly constructed from indigenous hardwoods such as beech or ash, which were turned and painted, paired with hand-woven rush, cane, or upholstered seats.

Authentic Regency painted chairs display period construction techniques like hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, age-related wear to the painted surface, original rush weaving, and neoclassical decorative motifs such as x-back splats or botanical cresting.

A Regency elbow chair functions as an accent piece in a hallway, bedroom, or living room space, complementing both traditional period schemes and modern minimalist settings as a desk chair or corner piece.

Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the wood from drying out and paint flaking. Clean the rush seat gently with a dry soft brush and vacuum attachment, avoiding water or harsh chemical cleaners.
