Antique Edwardian Maple & Co Mahogany & Satinwood Inlaid Display Cabinet C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

An exceptional Edwardian mahogany and satinwood inlaid display cabinet by Maple & Co., dating to circa 1900 and displaying the refined quality associated with one of Britain’s most important late 19th and early 20th-century furniture makers.

The cabinet is beautifully proportioned, with a tall architectural form incorporating a glazed upper display section above a fitted lower cupboard. The upper section features a broad central glazed door flanked by curved glazed side panels, creating an elegant three-sided presentation area ideal for porcelain, glass, silver or decorative objects. The interior is lined in a traditional green patterned fabric and fitted with display shelves.

The cabinet is richly detailed throughout with fine satinwood line inlay and decorative marquetry, including delicate scrolling and foliate motifs across the frieze, drawer fronts and lower doors. Fluted uprights, carved capitals, a shaped architectural pediment and elegant tapering feet reinforce its sophisticated Sheraton Revival character.

Below the display section are two drawers with brass handles, together with a pair of inlaid cupboard doors opening to useful internal storage.

Importantly, the cabinet bears the Maple & Co. name, giving the piece a documented maker connection and considerably stronger collector appeal than an unattributed example.

Fine furniture by recognised makers such as Maple & Co. remains desirable among collectors and interior designers, particularly when combined with strong original decorative detail, generous scale and practical display use.

This Edwardian display cabinet dates to circa 1900 and is made from mahogany with satinwood marquetry inlay, standing 234 cm high, 139 cm wide, and 48 cm deep. The architectural form includes a shaped pediment top, a central glazed door flanked by curved side panels, fluted uprights with carved capitals, two drawers with brass drop handles, and lower cupboard doors, all supported on turned tapering feet. The warm brown timber is decorated with scrolling and foliate marquetry motifs across the frieze, drawer fronts, and lower doors, while the upper interior is lined with a patterned green fabric behind glass. Signed by Maple & Co., the piece reflects a Sheraton Revival design. In a modern home, this substantial cabinet provides storage and display space for collections of porcelain, glassware, silver, or decorative objects in a living room, dining room, or hallway. The upper glazed section offers visibility from multiple angles, while the lower cupboards and drawers conceal household items. The warm tones of the timber and intricate inlay suit traditional and classic interior schemes, bringing period character to a domestic setting.

Edwardian display cabinets, dating from around 1901 to 1910, are known for light, elegant proportions inspired by 18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite designs. They frequently incorporate mahogany frames, satinwood marquetry, delicate glazing bars, and silk-lined interiors to display fine porcelain and glassware.

Cabinet makers during this period favoured dense West Indian or African mahogany, frequently highlighted with satinwood, rosewood, or boxwood marquetry inlays. Glazed sections used float glass, while interior backings were often finished with patterned silk damask or velvet.

Authentic pieces by Maple & Co often feature stamped brass locks, stamped drawer edges, or enamel trade plates mounted inside drawers or on backboards. High-precision marquetry, finely turned legs, and well-fitted dovetail joinery are additional indicators of period authenticity.

Position the cabinet against a neutral or dark backdrop in a dining room, drawing room, or hallway to create a focal point. Use the glazed shelves to curate a balanced arrangement of ceramics, glass, or art objects alongside lighting to highlight internal textures.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a microcrystalline or beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, veneer cracking, and fabric fading.
