Antique Set of 8 Victorian Mahogany Shield Back Hepplewhite Style Dining Chairs Carvers Original Tan Leather

19th century
Description

Antique set of eight outstanding quality Victorian mahogany shield back Hepplewhite style dining chairs, comprising six single chairs and two carver armchairs, retaining their beautifully aged original tan leather seats. A superbly crafted English set dating to around 1890, combining elegant design with exceptional craftsmanship.

Inspired by the celebrated designs of George Hepplewhite, each chair features a graceful shield-shaped back with finely moulded and pierced splats, richly carved lower splat details and elegant serpentine crest rails. The matching carver chairs are particularly impressive, with beautifully shaped swept arms terminating in carved scroll handrests, adding both comfort and distinction. Raised on finely reeded square tapering legs united by stretchers, every chair displays crisp detailing and refined proportions.

This is an exceptional dining set, offering the perfect combination of elegance, comfort and practicality. The original tan leather seats have developed a wonderful patina over more than 130 years, complementing the rich colour and grain of the mahogany beautifully. Ideal for both traditional and contemporary interiors, the two matching carvers create an impressive focal point at either end of a dining table.

Condition Report: Presented in outstanding antique condition. The mahogany frames are structurally sound, sturdy and of exceptional quality, with a beautiful rich colour and mellow patina. The original tan leather seats remain in very good order, displaying attractive age-related wear and natural creasing that add character without detracting from their appearance. Minor surface marks are consistent with age and careful use.

This set of eight Victorian Hepplewhite style dining chairs, comprising six single chairs and two carver armchairs, dates to 1890 and is constructed from rich warm brown mahogany with original tan leather upholstery. The design incorporates elegant shield-shaped backs with pierced and moulded splats, serpentine crest rails, swept open arms with scroll handrests, and reeded square tapering legs united by straight stretchers. Each chair displays crisp carved detailing, natural leather creasing, and surface marks consistent with age. The single chairs measure 95.5 cm high, 53.5 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. This practical and elegant dining set works well in traditional or contemporary dining rooms, with the two carver armchairs serving as an impressive focal point at the ends of a dining table.

Hepplewhite style furniture originates from the designs of George Hepplewhite in late 18th-century England. Key characteristics include shield-shaped backrests, delicate pierced splats, straight tapered legs, and balanced classical proportions.

Victorian dining chairs were commonly crafted from dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany, walnut, or oak. Seats were traditionally upholstered in natural hide leather, horsehair, or wool velvet over spring and webbed frame foundations.

Authentic Victorian examples feature hand-cut joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, rich natural patina, weight consistent with dense tropical mahogany, and evidence of hand-carved details along the splat and frame.

Period mahogany chairs can be styled against neutral walls, contemporary stone flooring, or paired with a modern minimalist dining table to create visual contrast while retaining historic architectural interest.

Apply natural beeswax polish along the mahogany frame to protect timber grain and prevent drying. Leather seats should be periodically treated with a dedicated leather conditioner and kept out of direct sunlight to prevent cracking.
