This 19th-century French Rococo Revival hall chair is made from giltwood with damask upholstery and brass castors. The piece is finished in a bright gold colour with off-white fabric carrying a delicate grey damask pattern. It stands on cabriole legs terminating in small brass castors and features a high, waisted backrest topped with ornate scroll carving and elaborate cresting. Various intricate mouldings decorate the wooden frame, and the exposed gilding shows surface wear consistent with age and handling. Measuring 112.5 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, the chair has a seat height of 39 cm. In a modern interior, the chair functions as a decorative statement piece in a living room or as an elegant accent chair positioned in a hallway. It provides both a seating option and a distinct visual element rooted in French chateau style, bringing period character to domestic spaces.

The French Rococo Revival style is characterised by elaborate s-scrolls, c-scrolls, floral carving, cabriole legs, and gilded timber finishes. Originating in the mid-19th century under Napoleon III and inspired by Louis XV designs, this style emphasised lightness, curvature, and decorative surface ornamentation.

Giltwood furniture was typically crafted from carved hardwoods such as beech or walnut, coated with a layer of gesso, and finished using water gilding or oil gilding with genuine gold leaf. Seats were commonly webbed, hand-sprung, and upholstered in silk brocade, velvet, or floral damask fabrics.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-carving with subtle irregularities, traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, and natural wear or cracking to the gesso substrate. Age-appropriate oxidation on gilding and original brass ceramic castors on lower legs also indicate period construction.

A French gilded hall chair functions as a focal accent piece when placed in an entryway, dressing room, or alongside a modern console table. Combining the ornate gilded frame with contemporary minimalism creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern design.

Giltwood surfaces should be gently dusted with a soft, dry feather duster or dry microfiber cloth. Avoid water, commercial polishes, or liquid cleaners, as moisture can dissolve the underlying gesso layer and lift the gold leaf.
