Webberley Antiques has dated this Chinese Chippendale Giltwood Chair to the 19th Century.
The gilding is original, over gesso and red bole, and the design is strikingly beautiful.
The earliest records of the Waugh family business date from 1769 when they occupied 5, 4 and 3 Goodge Street, London – this was the year that Goodge Street was built – and the business was called “London Carpet Warehouse” and was a high end carpet manufacturer, upholsterer and decorative furniture maker.
By 1839 the business was being run by the third generation of the Waugh family in exactly the same premises and they continued to expand significantly through the 19th century collaborating with E W Godwin in the 1870s to make specialist furniture of the finest cabinet work, upholstery and carpets. They also offered a complete interior design scheme for wealthy clients.
Goodge Street was re-numbered in 1880 as part of the overhaul of London street numbers, and from this time 5 & 4 Goodge Street became 8 & 6 Goodge Street.
The firm exhibited widely, including the International Exhibition of 1862, and won many accolades and enjoyed Royal, aristocratic and international patronage.
This chair would have been made bespoke for a grand house or exhibition and is one of a very few remaining Waugh & Sons pieces. It bears testament to the quality of the company’s designs, skills and refinement.
A really stunning chair in a beautiful bespoke Chinese Chippendale design and dating from around 1830, it is in superb original and well cared for condition.
Dimensions are:
26 inches high, 19 inches wide and 18 inches deep. The seat height is 14 inches, from front to back of seat is 16 inches and from seat to top of back is 12 inches.
