A pier mirror is a tall, narrow mirror designed specifically to hang on the pier space between windows or in formal entrance halls. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors were placed above pier tables to reflect natural light into dark interiors and create an illusion of greater spatial depth.

Victorian giltwood mirrors were typically constructed from pine or lime wood frames covered with gesso, a plaster-like composition. Decorative ornament was sculpted onto the framework before thin sheets of gold leaf were applied using either water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces display age-appropriate signs of wear, such as dark spots or oxidisation (foxing) on the glass mirror plate, red or yellow clay bole peeking through worn gilding, and hand-sawn wooden backboards fastened with handmade nails.

Interior designers frequently position tall pier mirrors in narrow corridors, foyers, or alcoves to draw the eye upwards and amplify available light. Placing the mirror opposite a window or beside a key piece of furniture creates vertical rhythm within contemporary rooms.

Maintain giltwood frames by dusting gently with a soft, dry feather duster or dry painter brush. Never apply liquid polish, water, or chemical cleaners, as these solvents dissolve gesso and strip away original gold leaf layers.
