Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian mahogany carver chair is an armchair intended for the head of a formal dining table, originating in 18th-century Britain. Characterised by open armrests, high backs, and fine timber craftsmanship, these chairs allowed the carver of the meal to sit comfortably with extra arm support.

Authentic period carver chairs were constructed using dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany, assembled with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. Decorative features like reeded mouldings, carved splats, turned front legs, and cross-braced saltire stretchers were standard structural and aesthetic elements.

Authentic period pieces exhibit evidence of hand-tooling, hand-cut dovetails or mortise joints, and irregular hand-sawn wood under seat frames. The timber displays natural patination, dark oxidisation in crevices, and heavy structural weight characteristic of original mahogany stock.

An antique carver chair serves effectively as an accent piece in a contemporary hallway, paired with modern dining sets, or positioned alongside a library desk. Updating the seat upholstery with a contemporary linen or textured fabric creates a balanced contrast between historical timber and modern design.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patina. Keep the chair clear of direct sunlight and radiator heat sources to prevent wood movement, cracking, or glue deterioration.
