Set of Four Regency Brass Inlaid Dining Chairs C. 1830

19th century
Description

On behalf of a client who has owned these chairs for decades.

A particularly fine set of four dining chairs made in c. 1830.

The tablet rails surmounted with beautiful crests, carved in the solid and with drop bell husks vines and centred with leaves and seedpods. The rails with exquisite hand cut brass inlaid panels of delicate vines and intricately scrolled foliage and flowers.

The mid rail carved in the solid with scrolls and foliage.

The chairs frames are beech and have been grained to look like rosewood, very effectively so, and this was common practice as rosewood was a very expensive timber and difficult to work.

With sabre legs and overstuffed seats covered with a crimson cut damask in good condition throughout.

A few inactive, long dead, worm holes in seat rails (very few), minor dings and scuffs consistent with age and careful use. One tablet rail at back with a few small dents. Vey solid and sturdy. No repairs or later elements to the frames and no movement or weakeness in joints. The brass as good as the day it was inlaid with no missing sections and with lovely natural and warm patination.

In very good condition for age and usable, sturdy and very comfortable. A testament to the maker that after 200 years these chairs are still so beautiful, usable and as made.

These wonderful chairs can be viewed in Calne, Wiltshire, by arrangement.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency style dining chairs, prominent in early 19th-century Britain, feature neoclassical proportions, classical motifs, and decorative elements influenced by Greco-Roman and Egyptian design.

Regency chairs were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, frequently accented with brass stringing, marquetry, or carved detailing alongside drop-in upholstered seats.

Authentic Regency chairs often feature swept sabre legs, brass inlay on crest rails, hand-cut joinery, and natural age-related wear around frame joints and lower legs.

Regency chairs can be paired with contemporary dining tables to create visual contrast, or placed individually as accent seating in hallways, studies, and bedrooms.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, polish the timber periodically with natural beeswax, and avoid abrasive cleaning products that could loosen brass inlay or alter historic surface finishes.
