Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Napoleon III mirrors from the mid-to-late 19th century are characterised by ornate frame mouldings, rich gilding, and decorative motifs such as cresting, foliage, and classical ornamentation. They often feature rectangular or arched silhouettes designed to sit above mantels or console tables.

Traditional giltwood frames were constructed from a timber core, often pine or oak, covered with layers of plaster gesso. Artisans carved intricate details directly into the wood or moulded gesso before applying fine gold leaf using water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period giltwood mirrors display natural wear to the gilded surface, often revealing the reddish-brown clay bole beneath the gold leaf. The reverse side typically shows hand-sawn timber backing boards, and the original glass may exhibit natural foxing or slight distortions.

A giltwood mirror creates a striking focal point when paired with modern minimalism, providing architectural interest and visual texture. Hanging the mirror above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace mantel balances modern clean lines with classical historical craftsmanship.

Clean the mirror glass with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water, avoiding chemical glass cleaners that can seep behind the frame. Dust the giltwood frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding moisture or harsh polishing compounds that strip delicate gold leaf.
