Victorian Chippendale Style Mahogany Fretwork Wall Mirror, Circa 1880

19th century
Description

A decorative late Victorian mahogany wall mirror in the Chippendale style, dating to circa 1880.

The rectangular mirror plate is enclosed within a moulded mahogany frame with a narrow gilt slip, surrounded by an attractive pierced and shaped fretwork frame. The elaborate cresting incorporates scrolling and foliate motifs, with corresponding shaped decoration to the sides and lower apron, all inspired by 18th-century Chippendale designs.

The mahogany has developed a warm, rich colour and the mirror plate displays attractive age-related foxing and spotting, adding considerably to its character.

A particularly decorative antique mirror of elegant proportions, ideal for a hallway, bedroom, drawing room or positioned above a chest or console table.

English, circa 1880.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chippendale style fretwork mirror features a distinctive scroll-cut timber frame, often accented with a decorative crest and apron, popularised by cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale in the 18th century and widely revived during the Victorian period.

These mirrors were constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-cut fretwork scrolling, silvered mirror glass, and often a narrow gilded inner slip framing the mirror sight edge.

Authentic period examples feature hand-sawn timber backboards, natural oxidisation on the mirror glass plate, minor surface patina on the gilded slip, and historic wear consistent with age along the delicate fretwork edges.

Mount the mirror centrally above a dining room sideboard, entry console table, or fireplace mantelpiece to create an architectural focal point that adds warmth to neutral modern wall finishes.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply beeswax polish sparingly along the wood grain, and avoid spraying liquid glass cleaner directly onto the glass to protect the gilded slip.
