Georgian fretwork mirrors are characterised by mahogany frames featuring flat-carved fretwork edges, pierced cresting, and scrollwork sides. Originating in the mid-to-late eighteenth century, these mirrors drew heavy influence from Chippendale design pattern books.

These mirrors were primarily constructed from native pine or oak sub-frames veneered with dark mahogany. The reflective plates were made of silvered or mercury glass, which naturally aged over time to produce characteristic foxing and spotting.

Authentic period examples feature hand-sawn timber backboards, original joinery, hand-carved pierced detail, and natural oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate. The mahogany frame will typically exhibit historic patina and subtle variations consistent with hand tools.

Position the mirror centrally above a hall console table, dining room sideboard, or fireplace mantelpiece to create visual balance. The rich timber tones contrast effectively against contemporary neutral paint palettes or dark feature walls.

Dust the timber frame regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, applying beeswax sparingly along the grain once or twice a year. Clean the glass plate by lightly dampening a cloth, taking care not to let moisture seep into the rebate or contact the frame.
