19th century
Description

Quality Pair of 19th-Century Leather Chesterfield Club Armchairs

A fine quality pair of late 19th-century Victorian beige leather Chesterfield club armchairs, retaining their original hand-dyed leather hides and displaying a superb, gently worn patina. The leather has been carefully cleaned and polished, giving a wonderfully soft, supple feel while preserving the depth of colour and character. Traditionally horsehair-filled, with classic deep button-back upholstery and loose feather filled seat cushions, these chairs offer exceptionally comfortable seating.

Generously proportioned, each armchair features a full buttoned scroll back and arms, with beautifully curved silhouettes and a strong, timeless Chesterfield profile. They stand on turned bun feet and remain in excellent original condition, reflecting both their quality and durability. Upholstered in high quality hide and hand dyed to an elegant beige/tan tone, the leather shows a rich, even finish with a striking patina that speaks of age and fine craftsmanship. Heavy and solid, these armchairs are built to last and make a bold statement in any setting.

Combining comfort, style and period charm, this handsome pair would sit perfectly in a library, drawing room, study or contemporary interior looking for a touch of vintage luxury. Seat height: 48cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 19th century, a Chesterfield club armchair is characterised by deep buttoned leather upholstery, equal or integrated arm and back heights, and classic rolled armrests.

Traditional construction utilised solid hardwood frames, steel coil springs, natural hair or fibre padding, hand-tacked brass studding, and vegetable-tanned horse or cow hide leather.

Authentic pieces feature hand-stitched leather panels, genuine hand-tufting with individual leather buttons, individual brass nailhead trim, and natural surface patination acquired through age.

Pairing deep leather armchairs with minimalist contemporary tables, neutral wool rugs, or structured metallic floor lamps creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic across varied interiors.

Maintain vintage leather by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft cloth, and applying specialized leather balm to preserve flexibility.
