Antique Japanese Lacquered Box

1900 - 1920
Description

A lovely lacquered box dating from the early 20th Century. It has a black lacquered finish decorated with traditional imagery of rabbits and foliage. The hinged lid opens to a plain interior.

The piece is in good condition for its age and displays well. There is some wear and rubbing to the lacquer in places, a couple of minor shrinkage splits and general signs of age and use but nothing detrimental. The hinges are in good order and the interior is clean and tidy.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese craft technique where gold or silver powder is applied to wet urushi lacquer to create detailed decorative patterns, originating during the Heian period and expanding significantly throughout the Edo and Meiji eras.

These boxes are constructed from seasoned wood coated with multiple layers of sap from the urushi tree, then decorated using metallic powders, pigments, and fitted with small brass or bronze escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise hand-painted decoration, subtle surface variations, age-appropriate wear along edges, and a warm, smooth texture distinct from modern synthetic finishes.

Position the box on a low console, quiet desk surface, or dark wood shelf to serve as a focused decorative accent that introduces historical craftsmanship to a contemporary room.

Keep lacquerware away from direct sunlight, dry ambient heat, and extreme humidity changes. Clean gently using a dry microfibre cloth without liquid polishes or chemical solvents.
