18th century French gilt mirror.

It dates from the late 1700s and has its gorgeous original real gilt (gold leaf) on gesso frame.

It has its original split mercury glass in excellent condition, with light foxing but still with a clear reflection.

Mercury glass was not made after 1840.

It has its original backboards and a wire ready to be hung.

Perfect as a dressing room, bedroom or hall mirror or it could also be hung landscape.

Eighteenth-century French mirrors are typically characterised by hand-carved wooden frames finished with water gilding using gold leaf over red or yellow bole. Due to historical manufacturing limitations in glass size, larger examples often featured multi-pane or split mercury glass plates joined horizontally.

Mercury glass plates were produced by applying a thin layer of tin amalgam mixed with mercury onto the reverse of flat plate glass. The frames were carved from timber, coated in gesso, and meticulously water-gilded to create a reflective metallic finish.

Authentic mercury glass displays distinctive aging markers, including dark sparkling dots, gentle greyish clouding, and localized oxidisation where the metal backing has deteriorated. The reverse often shows uneven glass thickness and slight sparkle when viewed under light.
