Pair of 19th Century French Painted & Parcel Gilt Armchairs with Tapestry Upholstery

19th century
For Sale by Hand of Glory
Description

A very pretty pair of 19th Century French grey painted and parcel gilt fauteuil in Louis XV style, with floral Aubusson tapestry upholstery, sprung seats and raised on cabriole legs.

In good structural condition, the paintwork and gilding is original and nicely worn. The tapestry upholstery is also original with the back panels being in good condition and the seats are worn. The silk fabric to the reverse of one of the back panels is badly damaged but I can get this repaired by my upholsterer.

The chairs are very useable for someone who likes this aesthetic, however I can arrange re-covering (or just recovering of the seats) if preferred and can also supply fabric. Please get in touch for further details.

89cm high, 59cm wide max, the seats 48cm deep and 42cm high.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These armchairs, often designed in the Louis XV style, feature wooden frames painted with subtle tones and accented with selective gold leaf gilding, known as parcel gilding. Typically constructed as fauteuils with open armrests, they feature carved cabriole legs and detailed upholstery, such as woven floral tapestry.

Carved hardwood frameworks, typically beechwood or walnut, provided the structural base for these chairs. The surface treatment involved chalk gesso preparation layers, painted finishes, and hand-applied leaf gilding, paired with woven wool or silk tapestry fabrics.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-carved joinery, traditional hand-tacked upholstery construction, and naturally worn gilt finishes showing the underlying gesso layer. Look for period-appropriate dowel joinery, hand-carved wooden motifs along the crest rail and apron, and genuine surface patination.

Positioning a pair of these armchairs within a neutral or contemporary living area introduces textural contrast and historical character. The muted painted tones and pale blue floral tapestry complement subtle colour schemes while providing balanced geometric symmetry.

Keep gilt timber frames away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture, dusting gently with a soft dry brush rather than liquid cleaners. Vacuum tapestry upholstery carefully using a low-suction soft brush attachment, and consult a specialist restorer for any structural fabric or wood repair.
