An Exhibition Quality Italian 19th Century Carved Walnut Armchair After Andrea Brustolon

19th century
For Sale by Loveday Antiques
Description

An exhibition quality grand Italian walnut armchair carved in the Baroque style after Andrea Brustolon, possibly by the great Florentine carver Luigi Frullini (1839-97).

Italy circa 1850.

The arched toprail carved with reclining putti flanking a shell above a padded embossed leather back within a leaf-carved frame, the lower section with two further putti seated on scrolling arms over a solid seat and a scalloped rail on scrolled supports carved with Atlantes connected by a scrolling stretcher upon which reclines a putto within a garland over a shell.

An amazing tour de force and true tribute to the famous 17th - 18th century carver Andrea Brustolon.

The sculptural excellence of this piece suggests that it would have been made for one of the international exhibitions in the second half of the 19th century. It has the quality of the great Florentine carver, Luigi Frullini, (1839-97), although his preferred historic period tended to be the Renaissance rather than full-blown Baroque as here. After having researched we have found nothing similar for comparison so can only suggest Frullini to be the maker due to its sculptural design and excellence of carving.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Andrea Brustolon was an 18th-century Venetian sculptor whose figural wood carvings inspired 19th-century Italian cabinetmakers to produce detailed seating featuring mythological figures and putti.

These chairs are predominantly crafted from solid walnut, valued for its dense grain suitable for deep carving, often featuring embossed leather or fabric upholstered panels.

Authentic examples feature complex hand-carved sculptural details such as allegorical figures, hand-cut joinery, dark natural patination, and substantial overall timber weight.

Positioning a sculptural chair as a standalone accent piece in an entryway, library, or living space creates visual contrast against modern neutral backdrops.

Dust intricate carvings regularly using a soft bristle brush, apply clear beeswax polish periodically to preserve the timber finish, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources.
