Pair of Attractive Bergere Armchairs 1920s

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

We have a good looking pair of bergere armchairs which are sitting well and on the smaller side making them perfect if space is tight. English late 1920s, very attractive with front paw feet, well shaped arms and fine looking round backs. They are comfortable to sit in.

Condition is good with the frames solid and tight, just genuine day to day historic wear with no repairs. The extensive cane wear has a few nicks to the backs but nothing to be particularly concerned about. We have a tight webbed and sprung base on which the seat cushions sit which are upholstered in a woven fabric in shades of dusky pink with little blue accents, is good, clean and rip free with a little wear but perfectly usable. If you wish to discuss reupholstery please call us. Mark our upholster has completed many of these for us in the past. We’ve ensured both chairs are ready for placing.

A great looking pair which are ready to place and would look good as a pair.

The price is for the pair.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bergere armchair is an upholstered armchair with an exposed wooden frame, traditionally featuring enclosed sides filled with upholstery or woven cane panels, originating in 18th-century France.

Chairs from this period typically feature solid hardwood frames such as walnut or mahogany, natural woven rattan cane panels, and drop-in or spring-upholstered seat cushions.

Look for period-correct joinery, natural hand-woven or machine-inserted double-skin cane panels, original frame patina, and characteristic 1920s decorative motifs such as stylised geometric carving.

Place a pair opposite a clean-lined modern sofa to create a conversation area, balancing the textural woven cane work against contemporary fabrics and minimalist decor.

Keep cane furniture away from direct heat sources to prevent brittleness, lightly mist the underside of the cane occasionally with water to maintain flexibility, and wax the wooden frame periodically with beeswax.
