Originating in 17th and 18th-century architecture, pier mirrors were designed to hang on the structural wall spaceor pierbetween large windows. Their primary function was to catch and reflect natural light into dark interiors while providing symmetry. By the late 19th century, French makers frequently paired them with integrated console shelves or demi-lune marble bases for entryways and formal reception rooms.

These pieces were typically constructed from carved softwood or pine cores covered with gesso, a smooth plaster-like compound.
