In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 17th and 18th-century architecture, pier mirrors were designed to hang on the structural wall spaceor pierbetween large windows. Their primary function was to catch and reflect natural light into dark interiors while providing symmetry. By the late 19th century, French makers frequently paired them with integrated console shelves or demi-lune marble bases for entryways and formal reception rooms.

These pieces were typically constructed from carved softwood or pine cores covered with gesso, a smooth plaster-like compound. Intricate floral and rope details were molded or carved into the gesso before being gilded with gold leaf using water or oil gilding techniques. Integrated consoles were often fitted with natural white or grey-veined marble tops.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural age-related craquelure or fine cracking in the gesso layer, revealing red or grey bole beneath the thin gold leaf. The backboards are usually hand-sawn wood panels secured with square nails or early screws, and the glass may display light oxidisation or foxing in the silvering.

A pier mirror works effectively in narrow hallways, foyers, or alcoves where space is limited but vertical height is present. The marble ledge provides a platform for styling small decorative accents such as a single floral vase, antique trinket dish, or sculptural object, while the long glass visually expands narrow corridors.

Giltwood and gesso surfaces are sensitive to moisture and should only be dusted gently with a soft, dry feather duster or dry microfibre cloth. Avoid liquid cleaning agents or water on the gilded frame, as this can dissolve the gesso ground. Marble tops can be wiped with a slightly damp cloth and mild soap, while glass cleaner should be sprayed onto a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror plate.
